A case that caused a strong response in Plovdiv. A construction company almost built a bas-relief of Elin Pelin – patron of the school of the same name in the “Zapaden” district.
The school reported to the municipality that a plasterboard wall was built over the writer’s bas-relief.
Due to the absurd case, the renovation work at the school was temporarily suspended, an urgent inspection was carried out.
The 90-year-old “Elin Pelin” primary school in Plovdiv is undergoing renovation and renovation. The construction activities also covered the students’ vacation. After her, the school was surprised to find that a wall had appeared on the face of their patron.
“The bas-relief is half-closed during the spring break, when we came on the eighth it was already closed,” said Tatyana Minkova, deputy director of Elin Pelin Elementary School – Plovdiv.
The school informed the municipality. Photos on social networks were also distributed by the civil organization “Save Plovdiv”. The repair contractor explained that they tried to dismantle the bas-relief, but failed, as it is a plaster cast.
“Here, according to the project, there is a fire-resistant wall with a corresponding fire-resistant door. The project has been agreed with the main directorate “Fire Protection”, added Hroni Abadjiev, representative of the contractor company.
Therefore, they built the wall over the bas-relief, which has been in the school for years.
“Probably from the 70s, Stalin’s socialist realism. This cannot be, this bas-relief cannot have artistic value. We don’t like the bas-relief in general, yes, that’s my opinion,” commented Hrony Abadjiev.
“We like the bas-relief, we are used to it,” added Tatiana Minkova, deputy director of “Elin Pelin” Elementary School – Plovdiv.
The municipality of Plovdiv stated that monuments are not erected and ordered the wall to be dismantled.
“The bas-relief will not be touched, we are moving the wall. We have agreed with the contractors themselves, so we do not have a problem at the moment,” said Kostadin Dimitrov, mayor of Plovdiv municipality.
“This monument has its value – spiritual, cultural, so from now on this problem should not be repeated,” said Vladimir Temelkov, Deputy Mayor “Education” – Plovdiv municipality.
The renovation of “Elin Pelin” school costs about BGN 4.8 million. The contractor of the project is the municipality.
