Third graders from Plovdiv celebrated Earth Day with colorful messages

--

Experts from the “Environmental Protection” Directorate at the Municipality of Plovdiv and “Bulekopak” JSC visited one of the green classrooms in Plovdiv, designated according to a project of the Ministry of Education and Culture. The hosts were the third-graders from NU “P. R. Slaveikov”, who wanted to celebrate Earth Day outdoors.

Environmentalists held an open lesson on the topic of “Separate collection and recycling of waste” and showed the children how this can be combined with caring for the Earth and animals.

The lesson took the form of a nicely presented theory, a fun game of associations and a quiz, in which the children actively participated and demonstrated a curious encyclopedic extracurricular knowledge about the planet Earth, about the processes by which we damage it, as well as about the numerous ways in which each of us can contribute to its preservation and restoration.

The third graders immediately showed what they learned about the colored containers, how to prepare the waste in advance and where the different types of waste – plastic, paper and packaging materials – should be disposed of. It was interesting for the students to learn how an ordinary juice box is transformed from a shiny commercial packaging into a waste that can be used as a resource to produce a brand new product. Fifty little ones realized their important role in this process and promised to never forget how much the Earth needs our daily care and love. Before the end of the open lesson, the “Animal Care” vending machine temporarily positioned in the school yard was demonstrated to the children.

Each of the children with a pet dog threw an empty plastic bottle into the machine, and the so-called the dog owner thanked him with a dose of granulated food, with which the child could please his dog or a neighborhood homeless person. Delighted by the opportunity to combine separate waste collection with animal care, the children wished that the vending machine would visit them for the next few days as well.

At the end of the lesson, they sent their “colorful” messages to their peers around the world: “Children against plastic!” and “We love animals!”.

For their diligence, the students received individual awards provided by “Bulekopak” JSC and “Oil Recycling” JSC, with which they will be able to maintain and upgrade their knowledge and share it with their friends and families.
