By tradition, lamb meat is present on our table for Easter and St. George’s Day. Days before the two holidays, we check how much the lamb costs. A BNT team entered a randomly selected butcher’s shop in Pazardzhik.

Here, the price of a kilogram of lamb shoulder is BGN 28, a leg – BGN 29. According to the observations of Angelina Tosheva, who has been working in a butcher’s shop for 16 years, people ask not only about the prices, but also about the origin of the meat.

“As of today, we already have fresh Bulgarian lamb. But the price is really quite expensive, but everyone looks to set aside money and buy for Easter and for the holidays to eat,” says Tosheva.

Pensioners are usually looking for alternatives to the foods we put on the traditional Easter table. However, despite the price, Fanka Minova prefers to buy lamb:

“And liver of sirma and lamb, although a little, but traditionally there should be. – What do you think of the price this year? – Well, how does it seem to me, like all other prices. For me, the price is high because I am a pensioner, but for people who have high incomes, I guess it’s not that high.”

If you choose to put lamb on your table, here is what veterinary inspectors advise about its quality.

“Customers should pay attention to whether the meat is fresh, that there is no mucus, that it is pink, and these are signs that show that the meat is fresh and properly stored,” said Dr. Velka Nekezova – chief inspector at ODBH – Pazardzhik .

And to be sure that the meat is from a Bulgarian farm, look for one with a blue seal. It guarantees native production.
