One of the most curious and ancient traditions of the Land of the Rising Sun – Hanami (literally: “viewing flowers”), delights the people of Varna. Japanese cherry trees have been blooming in the Sea Garden for a few days. They show their brilliance in just a few days, and the rain quickly removes the tender petals from the branches that form a colorful pink carpet.

In the Sea Garden (near the border guard’s monument), since 1999 there have been Japanese cherry trees. They were donated by Prof. Emer Masaki Soma of the University of Tokyo. Even then, unknown persons stole part of the saplings. The trees are decorative and are only for the pleasure of the eye. We should keep them and admire them, not think that we are going to make jam or compote with a Japanese taste.

The trees are satozakura (Sato-zakura). Cherry blossoms are closely intertwined with the culture of Japan. For the Japanese, the cherry blossom is the personification of all flowers. The delicacy and simple fragrance of the flowers symbolize purity and simplicity – traditional values of Japanese culture.

We remind you that a few days ago, 20 new young Japanese cherry trees bloomed in the Sea Garden. The trees, which were donated to the Municipality of Varna, were planted last year by the Municipal Enterprise “Project Management and Landscaping”, which takes care of Varna’s largest park. The cherry trees are near the Natural History Museum.
