After years of living abroad, young families in Gabrovo choose to live in the countryside and return to their roots.

They will gather at a meeting in Tryavna within the the return campaignstarted at the end of 2022. The stories will be told by young people who have returned from England, Germany and Denmark.

The purpose of the campaign and the meeting is to encourage other Bulgarians, scattered around the worldto return to their native places.

Depopulation is one of the major problems of the Gabrovo region, which is at the top of the negative demographic ranking – 69 villages in it have already died.

“We will the first community of returnees“, explains Maria Basheva, regional governor of Gabrovo.

“They are our white swallows and we are glad that they are already a whole flock“.

Ana Ivanova and her husband are returning to Tryavna after 14 years in England. The decision is made after the restrictions during the pandemic.

“We realized that all material things in such a moment – closed, are not so important. The root started calling us to go home. Another big reason for returning to Bulgaria was the birth of our child. In Tryavna, it’s as if time has stopped. Everything is very calm. Sofia is 2 and a half hours away, the sea is 3 hours away. A very good place for communication between cities.”

“Our neighbor is a grandmother who grows her own vegetables. I recently had a birthday. She had collected 5 tulips for me, to give me a bouquet for my birthday. This cannot happen to you abroad,” adds Ana.
