One of the most serious concerns of parents is that vaccines contain dangerous ingredientsmostly mercury.

This is clear from a representative survey among parents, commissioned by the Ministry of Health, in partnership with UNICEF Bulgaria.

What is the truth?

As a preservative, mercury is actually included in the composition of some multi-dose anti-influenza vaccines in order to protect the vaccine from secondary bacterial contamination, according to the Ministry of Health.

Vaccine calendar – which are the mandatory immunizations and reimmunizations

In the early 20th century, most vaccines were packaged in multidose vials. Thus, during the aspiration of one dose of vaccine and returning the vial to the refrigerator for the next aspirationwas createda prerequisite for secondary bacterial contamination nand the vaccine. This, in turn, could lead to abscesses at the injection site, and even to blood infections, which can be fatal.

To solve this problem, in the 30s of the 20th century preservatives are added to vaccines. The most commonly used preservative at the time was thiomersal, an ingredient containing mercury.

Due to the fact that children are often immunized, they received certain amounts of thiomersal. Scientists, however they find no evidence that the amounts of thiomersal in vaccines can cause disabilities. Moreover, mercury naturally exists in the earth’s crust, soil, air and water, and all humans are exposed to it. In fact, newbornswho are exclusively on natural nutrition, they take in twice as much mercury with their breast milkthan is the amount contained in vaccines.

The vaccines that are administered in Bulgaria, do not contain thiomersalemphasized by the Ministry of Health.
