There are four cases of whooping cough registered in Plovdiv. Three of the sick are students, and the youngest infected child is 1.9 months old.

All have full immunization status for age. With them, the flow is relatively easy. They were left for home treatment. This was commented to NOVA by Dr. Milena Panayotova, director of the Directorate “Supervision of Infectious Diseases” at RZI-Plovdiv.

She added that in two Plovdiv schools, quarantine measures were taken regarding the classes of the sick.

“The measures have nothing to do with the quarantine in case of COVID. The children attend classes. An organization has been created by the school management to minimize the relationships of the contact children with the healthy ones in the educational institutions,” said Dr. Panayotova.

She added that if there is a surge in cases, the decision on the organization of the educational process is not taken by the RZI. “The inspection only gives a recommendation to limit contact and some form of quarantine, and how it will be implemented is a decision of the school management,” said Dr. Panayotova.

“Whooping cough is an airborne infection. With all such infections, larger gatherings carry the risk of spreading. I wouldn’t say that the Easter holidays are a prerequisite for more cases. The seasonality of the disease is in the summer months,” Milena Panayotova added.

According to her, GPs have all types of vaccines for mandatory immunizations.
