“IN In Bulgaria, animal husbandry is being destroyed, and milk is decreasing. The Bulgarian farmer cannot satisfy his own village. We don’t have production.” That’s what farmer Petar Karadamyanov from Dolna Mahala, Plovdiv Region said.

“There is a demand. There is no milk in Bulgaria. The problem is, there won’t be any anytime soon. Animal husbandry is being destroyed and the thread is being lost somewhere in there. Our colleagues with goats are refused milk. Nobody wants to buy goat’s milk in Bulgaria – this is a big problem. They didn’t have a market, there was nothing for them to do – these are the explanations. Goat’s milk is a worldwide hit. Goat cheeses and yellow cheeses are in high demand,” he added.

In his words, “several small farms” have united, made investments, want to concentrate their quantities, but the dairies refuse them – “the dairies are looking for them to command and create conditions”, because “they have been working like this for 30 years and will continue”.

“We have to think about what happens to the fresh milk that is produced by the farmers. This year, the purchase of goat milk is largely refused,” said Simeon Karakolev, co-chairman of the National Sheep and Goat Breeding Association.

For three years, the import of dry and condensed milk from Ukraine has increased several times. Karakolev sharply criticized the lack of control and policy for sanctioning unfair trade practices.

In Bulgaria, animal husbandry is being destroyed, and milk production is decreasing

“The sale of low-quality cheese with palm oil and milk powder, ‘an imitation product that people buy instead of cheese.’ According to him, similar practices are absent in Greece, Romania and France, “because there are statesmen who come out and say – this is not good, it is not useful”, he said.

“The process is reversible as long as there is political and statesmanship will. We eat junk, and someone encourages this,” added Karakolev.

“It’s all corporate interest. The question is where is the national interest. Why should they buy milk from farmers? Hey, where are the trucks from Poland, from Hungary, from Ukraine! People are doing business,” he added.

Several livestock organizations opposed the government’s policy in the sector, SafeNews recalls. According to them, the current policy is leading to the destruction of Bulgarian dairy farming. For this reason, they raised the alarm about what their problems are and presented specific demands for getting out of the crisis.
