A frivolous game of lines and shapes – this is how the artist Hristo Genev himself defined the three-dimensional works he created, insisting that they be called sculptures, not sculptures. They were created without a prior clear project, somewhat spontaneously.
In front of the audience at the “Trap” gallery during the opening of his exhibition “DIFFERENT. An attempt at perfection” the author shared that when he begins “this tinkering with the wood”, the work often chooses its own path and guides his imagination and hand. If in the classical case the sculpture stands solidly and pushes out the space, then Hristo Genev’s sculpture is part of the space, shaped by a kind of oscillation between form and space.
He even calls it “form space”. And while the works may be titled, the creator deliberately leaves them nameless, they stand on their own. They are supported by 44 black-and-white photographs that recreate two-dimensional details of the abstract works. The twenty sculptures are made in different materials, but all were created primarily from wood. He especially thanked Nikolay Fitkov for the masterful work of casting part of them in metal.
Guests at the opening were treated to another artistic experience – a song sung live by the artist, for whom music is another strong passion.
The exhibition “DIFFERENT” can be seen on the first floor in the “Trap” gallery at the City Art Gallery – Plovdiv until May 16.
