92 days until Paris 2024: Equestrian sports bring Olympic silver to Bulgaria

--

Olympic Games are the biggest podium for almost all sports. In the different editions, it is possible that new ones appear on the horizon, or that they disappear. The introduction of modern sports such as skateboarding and sport climbing arouse controversial reactions, and the topic of removing traditional boxing and weightlifting is becoming more and more popular.

A slightly different sport has been a regular participant in the Games since 1900 (with few exceptions). Eventing, dressage and show jumping are the Olympic disciplines of equestrian sport. Individual and team medals are awarded in each discipline. Women and men compete on equal terms.

Bulgarian equestrian sport debuted at the Olympic Games 100 years ago in Paris. In the French capital, we are represented by Gen. Vladimir Stoychev and Krum Lekarski. In the final ranking, the general is 11th out of 99 competitors. Stoychev also jumps at Amsterdam 28. In addition to the 20s of the last century, our representatives participated 8 more times at the largest international sports forum – 1932, 1956, 1960, 1972, 1980, 1992, 2000 and 2004.

The only Olympic medal in our history was won by Georgi Gadjev, Petar Mandajiev and Svetoslav Ivanov in the dressage team at the “boycotted” Moscow 1980. The Bulgarian team won the silver with 200 points ahead of Romania at the impressive stadium in Bitsa, about 50 km from Moscow. The gold goes to the hosts from the USSR, who finished 800 points ahead of our team.

In the individual competition, our best performance was the fifth place of Genko Rashkov with Euphoria from Stockholm in 1956 – on all-around riding. Then the Games were in Melbourne, but because of the quarantine of the horses, the competitions were moved to Sweden. The success was duplicated in 1980 in Moscow by Tsvetan Donchev – again fifth in all-around riding.

In our country, equestrian sport is under the auspices of the Bulgarian Equestrian Federation. It covers show jumping, dressage, eventing and endurance. The Federation has been conducting its organized activities since 1914. It has been a member of the International Equestrian Federation FEI since 1928. He is also a co-founder of the European Equestrian Federation.
