The Culture Space at the Former Gunpowder Burial Grounds qualified for second-stage funding under the US World Program for the Restoration of Culturally Significant Buildings.

The municipality of Varna, in the person of the mayor Blagomir Kotsev, gave its consent to carry out ongoing repairs for the conservation of the ReBonkers culture space, which is housed in the former gunpowder burials of Varna.

For Varna, the fact that the proposal of the “Talyana” association for the conservation of the facility passed the first stage of selection by the US Ambassador’s Cultural Preservation Fund is of extreme importance. I am convinced that there is a real opportunity for the site to be supported under the program and to present a good example from our city and country of responsible conservation of a historically, socially and culturally significant site. This is stated in the response of the mayor Blagomir Kotsev to the request for support from Kalina Zhecheva, chairman of the board of the non-profit association “Talyana”, who is also the user of the property.

SNC “Talyana” asked the municipality, in its capacity as the manager of the real estate, for permission to apply for funding for conservation activities. The ReBonkers space is the only project from Bulgaria ranked in the United States’ global program for the conservation of cultural sites, called the “US Ambassador’s Cultural Preservation Fund”, the letter from the association says. According to him, the prestigious grant aims at the restoration and conservation of buildings of cultural importance. In 2022, through the same program, the Thracian tomb near the village of Sveshtari was restored.

The program provides for 100% coverage of the costs of conservation and visiting of American artists in Varna, the letter also states. An architect was involved in the project. Todor Daskalov, expert in working with historical buildings and cultural values. The American fund has invited the association to participate in the second stage of selection, where a final decision will be made as to whether the project will be financed.

The property on “Baruten Zopel” Street in Varna is public state property and is a protected facility with an area of 166 sq.m. It has been made available for use by the Talyana Center in October 2023. As it is a matter of conservation activities, the project does not require a building permit.
