The class organization of paramedics and their successors, the physician assistants, will now officially represent the class of these medical professionals. This became possible after the Parliament yesterday approved the changes to the Law on Class Organizations in the second reading. With them, the class organization “Bulgarian Union of Medical Assistants and Paramedics” (BSLAF) was created. After the promulgation of the changes in the “State Gazette”, paramedics and medical assistants will have the same rights and obligations as doctors, who have long had their own professional associations.

Until now, paramedics and physician assistants have been forced to join the Bulgarian Association of Healthcare Professionals (BAHPA), which they believe has harmed them in terms of representation. It was for this reason that they insisted for years on the legal recognition of their own professional organization.

There are about 2,000 paramedics and medical assistants in the country. Thrace University is among the six higher education institutions in our country, where the specialty “Medical Assistant” is studied.

Why it was so important for them to have an independent class organization and what opportunities this gives, listen in the audio file from Alexander Alexandrov, chairman of the Bulgarian Union of Medical Assistants and Paramedics.
