Whether an epidemic of whooping cough will be declared and what measures the health authorities will take in our country will become clear during a government meeting today, the Ministry of Health informed BNR. At a meeting with Minister Galya Kondeva today, the situation with the spread of the infection was discussed, as well as the possible options for measures.

Even if a national epidemic is declared, restrictive measures will not be introduced, as during the Covid pandemic, the chief state health inspector Assoc. Angel Kunchev explained to Nova TV.

One of the possible and already stated measures is the temporary change in the immunization calendar, which will enable the first vaccination against whooping cough to be given on the 45th day after the birth of the baby. As for the spread and clinical presentation of the infection, Dr. Lubomir Kirov of the Association of General Practitioners said that the symptoms are not as described in medical textbooks.

“Many colleagues are not and will not see the typical picture of whooping cough, and this is due to the vaccination carried out, as it is milder. Therefore, we must concentrate on the most at-risk, i.e. small babies who are not vaccinated, and with the older ones, of course, also with caution”.

Among the expected measures that the government will take is to allocate funds for diagnosis of whooping cough and that it be done free of charge for certain groups of patients.
