38 years ago: Silistrians manifested under the radiation background of the exploded Chernobyl

--

On April 26, 1986, a malfunction during a systems check at Reactor Four of the Lenin Chernobyl NPP in the USSR, in what is now Ukraine, caused a series of explosions that released thousands of tons of radioactive material into the atmosphere.

About 350,000 people were evacuated from the area of the explosion in the first days after the disaster, including 45,000 residents of the nearby city serving the plant – Pripyat.

Meanwhile, Northern Europe is showered with radioactive particles.

Days after the explosions, the people of Silistre calmly went out to demonstrations in honor of the Labor Day, and later on the day of the letters, the two brothers Cyril and Methodius, the Slavic script. The population of Bulgaria is among the most affected by the radiation, as the government of Todor Zhivkov hides the real facts surrounding the incident and people do not take the necessary precautions.

The radiation released into the atmosphere is the equivalent of at least 200 nuclear bombs like those dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.

The Chernobyl NPP was finally closed on December 15, 2000, and the remaining 3 healthy reactors continued to operate until then.
