With a majority of 35 municipal councilors, the proposal of an initiative committee, headed by academician Plamen Kartalov, to posthumously award the title of “Honorary Citizen of Blagoevgrad” to the first graduated Blagoevgrad artist – Stoine Shalamanov.

Voting was secret, after a proposal was made in the hall. Before the vote, Zdravka Chimeva, chairman of the “We, the Women” association, presented a brief biographical reference of the remarkable artist, highlighting his great merits in the field of cultural development in Blagoevgrad.

Among the other members of the initiative committee are: Elena Ilieva, Yordan Simonski, Kiril Alexiev, Ivan Milushev and Vasil Novoselski.

Stoine Shalamanov was born on April 4, 1936 in the village of Zheleznitsa. He grew up in his father’s house in the “Varosha” district, the city of Gorna Jumaya (today Blagoevgrad). He is the first graduate artist in Blagoevgrad. He was the founder of the group of artists in the city together with Hristo Barakovski and Georgi Nozharov in 1960.

From 1963, Stoine Shalamanov worked as a scenographer in DT “Nikola Vaptsarov” – Blagoevgrad until his death in 1984. Together with the director Kiril Alexandrov, he founded the club of cultural figures “Melpomena”.
