38 years after the catastrophic nuclear accident in Chernobyl, Prof. Georgi Rachev spoke as a living witness about the events in our country at that time. The climatologist said that the communist regime then reached its crescendo by doing nothing to protect its population.

“We were a little happy, because the radioactive cloud first passed through Northern Europe and only on May 1, late in the afternoon, entered the territory of Bulgaria,” explained Prof. Rachev. He also said that there are myths that the then army commander Dobri Djurov ordered the military to eat only food from the reserve. But in fact no one was informed about the danger of radiation and the warning from the state came fatally late.

“It was a huge tragedy, there were women who wanted to have an abortion,” recalled the professor in the morning block of bTV.

Rachev told how on shelves in the fruit and vegetable store there were cans of casserole, peas and green beans, which even in those years no one wanted to buy. However, they disappeared literally in one day after people found out about the radiation danger.

However, the worst thing for Bulgaria happened the following year, when radioactive fodder was imported, after which the milk and meat were also contaminated.
