The municipal councilors of Blagoevgrad rejected the proposal of 12 of their colleagues to hold a local referendum regarding the withdrawal of a new loan from the municipality of Blagoevgrad. The proposal entered as an extraordinary item at today’s regular meeting of the local parliament.

The proposal for the holding of the referendum concerning the drawing of a new loan was presented by the municipal councilor Dimitar Urdev. The proposal is that the citizens’ poll be held on June 9, when the elections for the European and Bulgarian parliaments will be held. If we manage to make such a decision today, we will meet all the deadlines from the point of view of the law so that it can be held on the day of the 2 in 1 election, said Urdev.

Municipal councilor Antoaneta Bogdanova spoke out against the referendum, pointing out that it would cost taxpayers dearly and predicting only 30 percent turnout. What will happen to the projects included in the program of the municipality of Blagoevgrad, if the referendum is held and collects the required number of votes, Bogdanova asked.

The mayor of the municipality of Blagoevgrad, Metodi Baikushev, defined the request of some of the municipal councilors as a clumsy attempt at politicking and pointed out the importance of the projects that must be implemented by assuming a debt of 14.5 million BGN, namely: str. “Promishlena”, the landslide on the road to “Kartala”, the payments for the repair of the opera house and the construction of two new kindergartens.

With the debt, the expansion of the building of the Seventh Secondary School, improvement of the energy efficiency of five town halls and the hall “September 22” will also be realized.

Out of 38 municipal councilors in the hall, 14 voted “for”, 16 municipal councilors were “against”, and five abstained.

The councilors rejected the initiative committee’s proposal for the posthumous awarding of the title of “Honorary Citizen” to the Blagoevgrad artist Stoine Shalamanov.

The local parliamentarians gave the green light to Georgi Spasov and Milen Stefanov for an in-depth partnership with the local football club “Pirin” – Blagoevgrad.
