Not being an expert on government protocol, I do have some knowledge.

The problem is not that Mitrofanova was in Plovdiv yesterday. She has not been recalled by Bulgaria as an ambassador, nor have we severed diplomatic relations with the Russian Federation. Nor is he restricted from traveling around the country.

The insult bordering on national treason is that she was put on the official podium next to the president of the republic. Or closely behind it. On a Bulgarian national holiday. It is within the rules for the diplomatic corps to attend such events. But diplomats do not stand next to the head of state, there is a specific place for them.

Even the fact that the ambassador of a country that declared our homeland as an enemy was present at this celebration is not scary. Nor is it terrible that this country was ever against the Union. On the contrary… the Russian ambassador demonstrates with her presence that Moscow’s former policy and current policy are wrong.

But standing close to our president is not only a protocol blunder, but a moral crime.

Not to me and to you, but to the thousands of Bulgarians who died because of Russian, Soviet and now Russian politics.
