Whooping cough is most dangerous until the first vaccination is given to newborns. Families expecting the mother to return with the newborn should also be vaccinated. Prof. Todor Kantarjiev said this on NOVA NEWS. “People, vaccinate your children,” urged the professor.
He explained that the world practice is to vaccinate pregnant women after the sixth month. Women can also get the vaccine before becoming pregnant.
Kantarjiev added that up to 40 days it is best for the baby to be only with the mother so that it does not get infected.
People who were vaccinated a long time ago may transmit the disease or become ill. The first symptoms may appear 6-7 days after contact with an infected person.
The professor said the typical symptoms of whooping cough are paroxysmal, “whooping cough” lasting more than 10 days, vomiting and nosebleeds. Treatment is with macrolide antibiotics. If these are not taken, the cough can last for months.
On the air of “Your Day”, the mayor of Kyustendil Ognyan Atanasov commented on the situation with the disease in the city. He said that there are no proven new cases of whooping cough in the municipality. The authorities are starting an information campaign about the benefits of vaccination against the disease.
