The decision on the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen area is postponed until next year, the European Commission announced, quoted by “Schengenvisainfo”.

At the meeting of the Council of Ministers of Justice and Internal Affairs on December 8, at which a decision must be made on the admission of Bulgaria to the Schengen area, there will be two separate votes. According to the agenda announced this evening, voting will be held separately for Croatia and separately for our country and Romania.

According to “Schengenvisainfo”, both countries have made significant progress on the way to the European visa-free zone, but they need to make additional efforts.

Romania received 12 new instructions, Bulgaria – 17, and they mainly refer to ensuring more independence of the courts, the fight against cross-border crime and corruption.

This decision was unexpected, as in September this year the European Commission called on the Council of the EU to accept Bulgaria and Romania in the Schengen area, which came immediately after the President of the European Commission (EC), Jean-Claude Juncker, in his annual State of the EU speech called for Romania and Bulgaria to be immediately added to the Schengen area for visa-free travel, for Croatia to be granted full membership in the Schengen area after fulfilling the criteria and for the Western Balkans to be given a better chance of membership.
