The Home Office is still debating whether to fine the girl who was filmed riding an electric scooter on a motorway and overtaking cars. When asked whether 21-year-old Emily Yordanova has already been sanctioned, the press center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs replied to “Sega” that an administrative file has been opened on the case.
Yordanova herself does not deny that she is the one in the video, in which she is seen moving at high speed. According to her, the clip was filmed shortly after Varna on the Black Sea highway. Used a friend’s scooter. “I took it to test it and I wanted to try the highway and I started to drive and raised the maximum 125 km/h. I have an ambition, if new scooters are created, to fly on this highway at 150 or 200 km/h”, the girl told BNT, explaining that she advocates for the rights of drivers of electric scooters.
Despite the negative reactions from her act, Emily Yordanova does not think she did anything wrong. “I’m not doing anything wrong, because I don’t drive like some drunk or drugged drivers. If the penalty is 50 BGN, I’m not worried, I’ll take them out and give them. But here’s the question, why should I be fined for driving according to the rules of the movement”, she also commented. According to her, electric scooters with a certain power can be registered as motor vehicles to be able to be driven on the main road network.
Yordanova is not the only one who was caught in the last week endangering the lives of others by driving a scooter dangerously. A 32-year-old man who was stopped by the police in Silistra was fined because he was driving on a road with a maximum speed limit of more than 50 km/h. A field test found him to be under the influence of amphetamine and cannabis.
1,604 violations were committed by drivers of individual electric vehicles, known as scooters, for the period from July 7, 2020 to June 16, 2022, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior. For these violations, 1,342 fines and 262 penal decrees were issued. In fact, it is absolutely forbidden to drive e-scooters on roads and streets where the maximum speed limit is over 50 km/h, i.e. mostly around the cities. On the other hand, they can be ridden completely freely on the designated bike lanes, and in the absence of such, the rightmost possible border of the traffic lane is used.
