The mystery surrounding 2-year-old Emile from France, whose remains were found by a passer-by after being missing for nearly 8 months, has yet to be solved.
The boy disappeared in July 2023 while visiting his grandparents in the mountain village of Le Verne.
Only briefly did the two adults lose sight of him. And when they asked to put him in their car, he was gone. Already in the first actions to search for him, more than 800 emergency services were mobilized in the search for the child.
On March 31, the Aix-en-Provence public prosecutor’s office announced the sad news that the remains of 2-year-old Emile had been found. A day earlier, the gendarmerie had been informed that bones had been found near the mountain village of Le Verne.
According to French newspaper Le Figaro, the bones were found near a village about a kilometer as the crow flies from the area that had been searched months earlier.
A genetic analysis prepared by French investigators revealed conclusively that the bones found were Emile’s. Inquiries will be made as well as further searches of the site.
The case of the missing 2-year-old child received resonance and emotional reactions in many European countries.
Now, during the investigation, new, gruesome details are still coming to light. One of them poses new ambiguities for the police – why the laces are missing from the little boy’s found shoes, reports the French broadcaster BFM TV.
Emil’s clothes were found just a few meters from his remains, writes BTV.
The broadcaster quoted a police insider as saying: “It’s just as strange as some of the other details,” he said.
“There are several theories. Missing shoelaces can be explained by someone’s intervention. But it is also possible that it happened naturally – when passing through bushes,” commented the investigator.
There is a third theory. Law enforcement is trying to figure out if it’s possible that the ties may have disintegrated on their own, depending on the material they were made of.
Exactly how Emil died remains unclear. Various versions are being worked on – from an incident involving a relative to the wolf theory. The investigators even targeted Emil’s grandfather.
“There are wolves here, especially in the summer among the flocks of sheep. A wolf can kidnap a child and run with him for half an hour without stopping and without shedding blood,” commented the mayor of Le Verne, François Balik, to Marie France.
The investigation into what happened to the child continues.
