Jens Stoltenberg: US aid to Ukraine is not too late

The nearly $61 billion in military aid to Ukraine that the US House of Representatives approved after months of debate is not too late, but the delay has had real consequences, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.

“Ukrainians have been outgunned for four months”Stoltenberg said in an interview with the American TV station MSNBC, quoted by BTA.

“The Russians had much more ammunition. And Ukraine was forced to distribute theirs… But it’s not too late. The Ukrainians have shown tremendous skill in defending their country.”the secretary general of the alliance emphasized.

After months of gridlock, the US House of Representatives on Saturday approved a bill for a new aid package with an overwhelming bipartisan majority. The text is expected to be voted on midweek in the Senate, where no obstruction is expected, and signed by President Joe Biden.

Stoltenberg indicated that the presence of NATO forces in Ukraine is not planned. However, Kiev’s alliance allies have the right to help it, and this does not make NATO a party to the conflict.

“Of course several NATO allies have men and women in uniform advising in embassies.”, Stoltenberg said in response to a question about a Politico publication that claimed the US was considering sending more military advisers to Ukraine. They will not participate in combat operations, but will advise and support the Ukrainian government and the Ukrainian military, the Politico article said.
