Journalist Dimitar Stoyanov was detained for 24 hours. He threatened a person who complained with a weapon, and that’s how he was arrested, reports bTV, citing the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The incident took place around 6:30 p.m. in the “Hadji Dimitar” district in Sofia. bTV claims that the citizen threatened by Stoyanov was a civil servant. According to the media, the person in question was a tax official, an employee of the National Revenue Agency.
Hours earlier, however, Dimitar Stoyanov shared a post on his Facebook profile with scratches on his head and a completely different version of what happened. He wrote: “Even when you shop gently, there’s always some jerk who will attack you because you shop at a store he doesn’t like. If you don’t get scared, he’ll run away and then attack you in the back, beat you like an angry woman and explain how he’s going to kill you. And you have no idea where it came from. I’m still wondering if it’s a provocation or an idiot.”
His colleague Atanas Chobanov wrote on Facebook that Stoyanov was taken away by patrol car from Pirogov, where he was receiving medical treatment.
Just a few days ago, the Association of European Journalists – Bulgaria expressed its indignation at a case brought against the team of the investigative site BIRD.bg, this time by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Kalin Stoyanov, involved in numerous political scandals. On Monday, it became clear that Stoyanov has filed a civil defamation lawsuit worth BGN 65,000 against BIRD.bg journalists Atanas Chobanov and Dimitar Stoyanov because of a series of materials, publications on social networks and media appearances dedicated to the case with the network of influence around Martin Bojanov, known by the nickname Notary, who was killed at the beginning of the year.
