Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has accused US President Joe Biden of contempt for the South Pacific country for suggesting his uncle was eaten by cannibals during World War II.

The US head of state spoke at the Pennsylvania War Memorial last week for his uncle, Lt. Amboise Finnegan Jr., who was an Air Force aviator. Biden said his plane was shot down over Papua New Guinea, which has become the scene of heavy fighting. “His body has never been found because there used to be a lot of cannibals in this part of New Guinea,” Biden said, referring to the country’s main island.

Claims by the American head of state that Finnegan’s plane was shot down are not confirmed by the military. According to a Pentagon report, Biden’s uncle was a passenger in a Douglas A-10 Havoc transport plane that crashed into the ocean after both engines failed on May 14, 1944.
