The beginning of the kinship between the Bulgarian and English royal dynasties was established in the 18th century – by Dukes Franz and Augusta of Saxe-Coburg-Saafeld. Two of their children were Ferdinand, grandfather of King Ferdinand of Bulgaria, and Victoria, mother of the Queen of Great Britain of the same name.
One of Ferdinand’s sons was August, who became the father of the Bulgarian king Ferdinand. Thus, the first king of the Third Bulgarian Kingdom turned out to be a second cousin of the English King Edward VII – son of Queen Victoria. Bulgarian Tsar Boris, son of Tsar Ferdinand, is a third cousin of King George V of England. Simeon of Saxe-Coburg is a fourth cousin of King George VI – the late Queen’s father.
Fifth cousins of Queen Elizabeth II are Simeon’s children – Kardam, Kiril, Kubrat, Konstantin-Asen and Kalina. Prince Charles is the sixth cousin of the grandchildren of Simeon of Saxe-Coburg.
Prince Battenberg also has a connection with the English royal family. The Bulgarian prince is the brother of the late Prince Philip’s grandfather. Elizabeth II’s husband’s mother was the eldest daughter of Prince Ludwig Alexander von Battenberg (brother of Prince Alexander I Battenberg) and Princess Victoria of Hesse-Darmstadt (granddaughter of Queen Victoria).
