Ukraine’s second seed Marta Kostyuk was very disappointed to lose the WTA 500 final in Stuttgart.
The 21-year-old Kostyuk lost the title match against Elena Rybakina 2-6, 2-6, her second defeat in a final after in San Diego a month earlier.
After the end of the match, the Ukrainian gave a strange press conference in which she complained about fatigue, and according to her, she was challenged because she had to face very good tennis players.
Most surprising in her speech was a disparagement of her Chinese counterpart Qingwen Zheng, who reached the final of the Australian Open without meeting a top 50 player in the world. As if it were up to her.
“Tennis is different every day and every tournament. I can play in a 500 tournament and meet top 10 players in 5 straight matches. At the same time, Qinwen in Australia reached the final without playing a top 50 player.” complained the Ukrainian woman.
She cruised her way to the title match where she faced Laura Siegemund, Qinwen Zheng, Corey Goff and Marketa Vondrushova.
Kostyuk joked that she was very disappointed to lose the final, as one of the organizers’ prizes was a Porsche car.
At last year’s Roland Garros, she caused one of the biggest scandals when she refused to shake the hand of winner Aryna Sabalenka after the match between them. Now, fans have once again not liked her behavior, with some of them believing that she just can’t lose.
