This is how much Nurgyul Salimova won from the Challengers’ Tournament

The Bulgarian representative of the Tournament of Challengers Nurgyul Salimova ended with a draw with the black pieces against Alexandra Goryachkina in the last round of 14 in Toronto.

Thus, our young (the youngest of all at the tournament) and talented chess player finished with 5.5 points in the seventh place in the ranking. Anna Muzichuk also recorded such an asset, but she was the only one who could not achieve a single victory in the race.


Thanks to her participation in Toronto, Salimova gained not only invaluable experience and the respect of many foreign grandmasters and specialists with her attractive game, but also a solid cash prize.

The World Chess Federation (FIDE) had determined 1,750 euros for every 0.5 point gained by the female contestants. With his asset, Nurgül earned 19,250 euros from the prize fund.

China’s winner Tan Zhongyi (who narrowly escaped losing to Nurgül in the 12th round) was 55,500 euros richer – 31,500 from the 9 points to her credit and an additional 24,000 going to the winner.

In second place was Humpi Koneru (against whom Nurgül recorded a victory at the beginning of the tournament) with 7.5 points and a total prize of 44,250 euros – 26,250 from assets and 18 extra for second place. Third was Lei Tingjie also with 7.5 points – she also takes 26,250 for her score and another 12,000 for her position in the final standings.

For men, the prize fund was double for first, second, third place and for every 0.5 point earned. The winner of the Tournament of Challengers Gukesh Domaraju became richer by a total of 111 thousand euros. His runners-up Hikaru Nakamura, Jan Nepomniaszczy and Fabiano Caruana each earned 79,500. Only fifth-placed Pragnananda Rameshbabu earned less than the women’s winner with her €49,000 in prize money.
