New rules are constantly emerging in soccer, some of which fans remain unaware of until they are put into practice on the field during a match.

One of them is the rule that after regular time and overtime of a tournament match, the cards are removed before the penalty shootout.

This very rule was put into practice on Thursday during the Conference League quarter-final match between Lille and Aston Villa, which Birmingham won on penalties.

During the penalty kicks, the visitors’ goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez started provoking the Lille fans with gestures, for which he received a yellow card. Interestingly, in normal time the Argentine keeper was also officially cautioned but not sent off after seeing a second yellow card.

The reason for this is precisely because, according to the FIFA and UEFA handbook, official cautions from regular time are erased after the end of extra time, so Martinez could have risked a second yellow card without being sent off in the penalty shootout.

Just three days after the Villa match, a mirror situation occurred in the FA Cup semi-final match.

This time, Manchester United guard Andre Onana was in the spotlight.

The Cameroon goalkeeper was booked during the Red Devils’ 3-3 draw with Coventry at Wembley.

In the penalty shoot-out, Onana also received a yellow card, but due to the already mentioned rule, he did not leave the field, but remained in charge for his team, managing to save Callum O’Hare’s penalty, and Ben Sheaf shot over the goal, and so Man United qualified for the FA Cup final, where he will play against Manchester City.
