Inter clinched the Serie A title after triumphing 2-1 in the Derby della Madonina against AC Milan in the 33rd round of the Italian championship. In this way, the Nerazzurri won the 20th title in their history.
Already in the sixth minute of the derby, there were ugly scenes, which referee Andrea Colombo quickly managed to extinguish.
Inter started the derby stronger and led 1:0 in the 18th minute. Benjamin Pavard crossed from a corner in the Milan penalty area, the ball hit the back of Theo Hernandez and then Francesco Acherbi, who was left uncovered, headed the ball into Mike Megnan’s goal from close range.
Seven minutes later, Inter could have scored a second goal. Dimarco crossed into the Milan penalty area, where Lautaro Martinez was released by the Rossoneri defense and shot from close range but wide.
In the 29th minute, Rafael Leao created serious tension in front of the Inter goal, but his shot was deflected by Jan Sommer.
Inter continued to be the more active team and in the 38th minute Nicolo Barella passed to Marcus Thuram who was in a good position to shoot but his shot was saved by Mike Menian.
Milan could have equalized a minute later, but Jan Sommer was able to save Calabria’s dangerous strike.
Fikayo Tomori made a big mistake in the Milan penalty area in the 40th minute and laid the ball to Thuram, who shot, but Mike Menian intervened impressively to save.
Inter led 2:0 in the 48th minute. Marcus Thuram outplayed Fikayo Tomori again, then fired a shot from the edge of the Milan penalty area into the bottom right corner of Mike Megnan’s goal.
Hakan Calhanoglu made a very dangerous shot in the 58th minute, which Menyan saved.
Milan brought intrigue back into the game in the 80th minute when, following a cross into the Inrer penalty area, Rafael Leao headed it to Gabia, who headed in but Jan Sommer saved, and then the ball hit the left side post of Inter’s goal . After that, Fikayo Tomori was the best placed and drove the ball into the Nerazzurri’s goal for 1:2.
In added time, the players of both teams lost their nerve and created a job for referee Andrea Colombo.
First, in the fourth minute of added time of the match, Theo Hernandez had a fight with Davide Fratesi, and then Denzel Dumfries intervened. A serious altercation ensued between Hernandez and Dumfries, which ended with a red card for both players.
Milan ended the derby with nine men after Davide Calabria tackled Davide Fratesi in the seventh minute of added time and Colombo sent him off with a straight red card.
Thus, Inter became champions of Serie A five rounds before the end of the season.
Inter won for the 20th time the title in Italy, and Simone Inzaghi reached his first title.
