Grigor Dimitrov, who has been in Madrid for several days, gave an interview to the Bulgarian media, on the eve of the tournament in Madrid, sharing what his progress in recent months is due to, what his future goals are and how he currently views what is happening in his life on and off the court:

“I’ve always looked at going after my goals and fighting to the end. That’s probably been one of my strongest qualities over the years. There are times when you don’t play good tennis and you don’t handle things well, but I always told myself that I should not give up until the end.

I had no expectations of myself for the past months and this was the best I could do. Expectations mean something different to everyone. I love my job and how much effort I have to put in every single day in the gym and on the court. I’ve been focusing right on that and I’ve just been playing solid tennis for the last few months. I know that if all these things are not a good level, then I have a chance against absolutely any opponent. I felt a sense of freedom and calmness in my last matches against the top players, and this is the biggest possible plus.

I am going through a lot physically and mentally. You can’t always be at 100 percent, fatigue is sometimes there and certain tournaments have to be missed. I did a few months where I felt really good physically, and that makes you more confident on the court and build. Getting into the top 10 is great news for us as a team. As long as the game and the body are at a level, there is no way that the results will not be at the level.

It’s good that we’re moving on after so many years. There is more ahead of me and I think the best is yet to come in absolutely every field. I always want to look at things positively. I have been through many different vicissitudes and I try to just enjoy the process, and the result is not the main thing for me.

I am proud of the things I do, not only as a player, but also as a man. It’s really nice to have enough experience behind you. I want to appreciate the things around me much more because my daily life has always been very hectic.

I’ve said many times that it’s good to go through as many things as possible, because it gives you not only life experience, but also the experience of the matches that I’ve won or lost. There will be a lot of good and bad over the years, but the peace itself comes when you try all of these things.

People will always want more. I am my own biggest critic. I appreciate every single person’s support I want to play well and win tournaments. I want that thing too, but right now I live the way I want and play the way I want. I’m running in my own race right now,” finished our first rocket.
