Bulgaria’s top seed in women’s tennis Viktoria Tomova has learned her draw for the WTA 1000 clay court tournament in Madrid, Spain, which begins on Monday.
In a first-round match of the main draw, the 29-year-old Sofia will face world No. 42 Xinyu Wang of China, against whom Tomova has played two matches in the past.
In 2019, the Bulgarian won in Budapest with 6:2, 6:1, but two years later, the Asian took revenge during the competition in St. Petersburg, where she achieved success after 6:1, 5:7, 7: 5.
If Viktoria Tomova manages to deal with the Chinese in Madrid, then in the second round she will face a duel against Caroline Garcia from France, who is placed under No. 21 in the main draw.
So far in her career, the Bulgarian has only made one appearance in the Spanish capital, her debut coming in 2023. Then Tomova started from the qualifiers, where, however, she lost to the Frenchwoman Clara Burrell in the decisive round. Still, our girl found a place in the main scheme as a “happy loser”, but there she lost to the Austrian Julia Graber in two sets – 1:6, 6:5(5).
