First hearing in a criminal case with a civil action against Alexander Morfovfiled by the director of the National Theater Vasil Vassilev, will be held on April 26 in the Sofia District Court, the actress Reni Vrangova, the director’s wife, told Ploschad Slaveykov.
Vasilev’s lawsuit was filed on June 16, 2023, three weeks after the Askeer Awards ceremony took place. The claim of the director of Narodnya is related to Alexander Morfov’s speech at this ceremony upon receiving the award for the best play for “Antigone”.

Morfov’s words against the principal were spoken in his presence, the complaint says, and caused him harm “pain, suffering, serious emotional discomfort, additional stress, tension and have worsened his health condition”. Morfov’s words were also spread by BNT, by numerous websites and other media, which further caused discomfort to the director of Narodnia. For this reason, Vasil Vassilev is demanding compensation of BGN 100,000 from Alexander Morfov.
The other cases filed by the director of the National Theater – against Kamen Donev and other actors – are civil. They are heard by the civil division of the court and do not carry criminal consequences, apart from the possible award of damages. However, the claim against Morfov is criminal, that is, it is brought by the prosecutor’s office and is under paragraphs of the Criminal Code. In the event of a negative outcome for the director, he will be convicted as a criminal.
Since last year, the court has also been considering a civil case filed by Desislava Atanasova against Alexander Morfov. It is about discrimination and is related to the rejection of Evgeni Budinov from the “Hushov” team. Desislava Atanasova took him as the chairman of the GERB parliamentary group, as he was last year. She is currently a judge of the Constitutional Court.
