Opening statements in the criminal trial against Donald Trump in New York will be made today (April 22), more than a year after the former president was indicted in the case. CNN.

Trump is accused of engaging in an illegal conspiracy to undermine the integrity of the 2016 election and an illegal scheme to suppress negative information that included paying an adult movie star hush money to cover up an affair.

Prosecutors say Trump disguised the deal as a legitimate payment and repeatedly falsified business documents to “promote his candidacy.” Trump has been charged with 34 counts of falsifying business documents.

David Packer, former chairman of American Media Inc., which publishes the National Enquirer, will be the first witness called by the district attorney’s office, according to CNN.

Trump, 77, faces a maximum of four years in prison if convicted, but could avoid prison and be fined instead. Donald Trump is the first US president (serving or not) to be indicted in a criminal case.

Donald Trumo has pleaded not guilty.

Trump’s historic trial will take place against the backdrop of his presidential campaign and could ultimately lead to the presumptive Republican nominee becoming a convicted felon months before voters head to the polls in November.
