U riots and an investigation into the issuance of fake driver’s licenses and extortion of citizens is taking place in the Greek region of Attica.
50 senior officials of the Ministry of Transport have been suspended and are being investigated for bribery, Attica regional governor Nikos Hardalias announced. These are directors and heads of departments in the regional directorate of the Attica region.
The unraveling of the criminal network in the transport ministry began after an anonymous tip-off to the anti-corruption unit. In exchange for bribes, licenses were issued even to professional drivers, as well as they facilitated all kinds of services for citizens against unregulated payment.
The investigation proved that in the field of public services in the municipality there were specific persons who came into contact with citizens, submitted a request for some service, and took money for fast and positive service.
The investigation is ongoing due to the scale of the network, district governor Hardalias said. The prosecutor’s office has already filed a charge of creating a criminal organization.
With the introduction of the new technologies, the goal is to completely eliminate contact between officials and citizens in order to avoid criminal acts, the regional governor specified.
