The Ministry of Health allows babies to be immunized against whooping cough earlier than scheduled in the immunization schedule.

The first vaccine will be administered when the babies are one and a half months oldand not as laid down in the calendar after the second month of the baby’s birth.

The reason for this is that at the moment the largest number of registered cases are those under the age of 1 year and complications in newborns are more common, reports the ministerial council.

On Friday, it became clear that there have been two deaths as a result of the disease. Two babies died of whooping cough in Kyustendil. The information was confirmed by the Ministry of Health.

The babies were one month old, i.e. in pre-immunization age. The disease is especially dangerous for infants who have not reached the required months for vaccination.

In Bulgaria, 314 cases of whooping cough have been confirmed so farcompared to 4 for the same period in 2023.

According to health authorities, a similar increase in whooping cough patients is often observed over a period of 3 to 5 years.

The Ministry of Health is calling parents, at the slightest doubt, to stop their children from attending educational institutions and to seek medical helpas well as to strengthen the filter in kindergartens and nurseries.

The Ministry of Education reports that they are ready to respond to an increase in morbidity and, if necessary, to introduce distance learning for individual classes.
