Taiwan’s Hualien County was rocked by dozens of aftershocks. Only minor damage was reported and there were no casualties. We remind you that on April 3, the region was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter scale, which killed at least 17 people, and since then more than 1,000 aftershocks have been recorded. Authorities said buildings in large parts of northern, eastern and western Taiwan, including the capital Taipei, shook overnight, with the strongest quake measuring 6.3.

The most important thing is not to panic and fear. In the event of an earthquake, it is recommended that all residents move to an open place.

Hsu Chen-wei, Mayor of Hualien County

Wu Qianfu, director of the Seismological Center, told reporters that the aftershocks were a “concentrated release of energy” and that more could be expected, albeit less powerful. He added that with heavy rain expected across Taiwan this week, people in Hualien should be prepared for further disruptions. The world’s largest chip maker, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, whose plants are on the island’s west coast, said some staff at a small number of plants had been evacuated, but systems were operating normally and all staff were safe.
