The regional health inspectorate in Smolyan appeals to all parents whose children are not immunized or reimmunized for whooping cough at the appropriate age to contact their child’s personal physician for vaccination as soon as possible. According to the data of the health inspection, at this stage there is no registered case in the region.

The prevention of whooping cough is a vaccine-preventable disease, say the specialists. The main goal of immunization is to protect newborns and young children from severe disease, as post-vaccination protection decreases with age, and it is possible to register cases among immunized children, adolescents and young people, but with a milder course.

According to the Immunization Calendar of the Republic of Bulgaria, the basic immunization against whooping cough is administered in three consecutive months from the time the newborn reaches two months of age. The administration of the main immunization should be completed no later than the age of 6 months of the child. Additional doses (reimmunizations) against whooping cough are administered in the second, sixth and twelfth years of children’s lives.

Special project

For the last week, 24 cases of chicken pox were registered in the region. The most positive samples are in Devin – 21, where chickenpox cases have been registered for weeks.
