A serious accident occurred early this morning on the Southern arc of the capital’s ring road before the exit to “Bulgaria” boulevard, eyewitnesses reported in the Facebook group “Disasters in Sofia”.

According to them, the driver is in serious condition. They also say that the car was moving at an extremely high speed, estimating it to be around 200 km/h, and subsequently ran off the road and crashed into an excavator parked in front of a company building. “With the BMW in front of me, he drove at least 200 km, lost control, swerved five or six times and got washed out,” writes Miro Petrov.

The impact was very strong, and the car was literally crushed. From video footage published in “Catastrophes in Sofia”, it can be seen that the car flew several meters, breaking a metal fence and crashing into the heavy vehicle parked in the yard of the company.

“We were going in the opposite direction and he got so strong that he flew and climbed on top. The interesting thing was that he released the emergency lights, sure not to interfere with the passing excavators,” commented an eyewitness to the serious accident. “The emergency vehicles are launched by themselves, and the impact was brutal in front of me. Me and another colleague stopped, we called 112. The man was breathing, but only so far, the car was crushed a lot, I hope they got him out alive,” adds another .

“For the moment he is alive, he is in a very serious condition,” wrote the eyewitness Biser Yankov, who also published footage of the brutal attack. “He was driving very fast, gave up and got into the excavator,” adds Yordan Yordanov.

7-8 patrol cars, an ambulance and a fire engine arrived at the scene of the accident, eyewitnesses wrote. “The view was not for photos,” they add.

According to an eyewitness, a foreigner was behind the wheel, as the doctor who arrived at the scene of the accident spoke to him in English.

Doctor Daniel Kirovski, who was in the emergency team of medics who arrived at the scene, a little later told BNR that the young man who crashed was a Turk who lives and works in Bulgaria. “The patient is alive and has been transported to Pirogov,” he added.

The 26-year-old man was seriously injured in the midnight accident on the Ring Road in Sofia, the medical facility reported. In the violent collision with the excavator, he suffered a brain injury as well as a leg injury.

More than 15,000 speed limit violations were recorded during a special operation by the European Road Police Service Network ROTPOL, which was conducted in the period April 15-21, the Metropolitan Directorate of Internal Affairs announced.

From there, they specify that on the territory of the capital, all the technical means for establishing the speed limit were actively working both during the day and at night. CCTV cameras captured a total of 15,580 speeding cars. For detected violations, electronic tickets will be issued and delivered to the drivers.
