Novak Djokovic has said he hopes to face Rafael Nadal at least once more. At yesterday’s Laureus Awards in Madrid, the Serbian was honored in the Sportsman of the Year category, while Nadal received an award for the activities of his foundation. After the ceremony, Djokovic spoke highly of his greatest rival.
“I have a lot of respect for Rafa. He is a good man and a legend of our sport. Nadal is the most important competitor in my career. At the beginning of the season in Australia I said that I hoped Rafa would play at least one or two tournaments. I hope I can play against him at least one more time,” said Jokera.
“Nadal has achieved incredible things both on the court and with his family and foundation. He is an inspiration to many young people both in Spain and around the world. That’s why I respect him a lot,” added the world No. 1.
So far, Nadal and Djokovic have faced each other 59 times, with the balance being 30-29 in favor of the Serbian. However, the “King of Glue” won their last meeting so far – in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros in 2022 (6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6).
Djokovic will not play at the Masters starting tomorrow in Madrid, expected to return to the court for the ATP 1000 event in Rome (May 8-19). For his part, Nadal will face wild card American Darwin Blanch (#1028) in the first round of the Madrid Open.
