The City Prosecutor’s Office in Sofia submitted an indictment to the court for an investigation into an organized criminal group for extortion, official and corruption crimes. This was announced to reporters by supervising prosecutor Angel Kanev.
Vasil Bozhkov has been brought to court as an instigator in complicity with officials from the former State Gambling Commission (DKH), who allowed fees due under the Gambling Act to not be charged and collected in full. As a result of the criminal activity, damages were caused to the state budget in the amount of BGN 559,739,164.70, and much lower fees were collected.
Ten persons were brought to court. Vasil Bozhkov, as the organizer and leader of the group, and the other nine – as participants in it, some of them in the capacity of officials from DKH. Among them are two former chairmen, one director of a directorate, as well as the businessman’s wife, Kanev pointed out.
The criminal proceedings were initiated in the now closed Specialized Prosecutor’s Office in 2019, Kanev also said.
More than 250 witnesses were questioned, and the indictment is about 3,000 pages long.
The Sofia City Court is expected to set a date for the injunction hearing.
