Whooping cough mainly affects children and adolescents who do not have developed immunity. The most infected are in Sofia, Stara Zagora, Kyustendil, Burgas and Varna. There are registered cases of the infection in 45 schools in the country and in 4 kindergartens.

If necessary, classes will switch to online training. There are 314 infected cases of whooping cough to date, 214 of which are in Sofia, but according to the health minister, the capital is not yet facing an epidemic. Such will be announced locally, by region.

In Varna, there are 17 children infected with whooping cough from different kindergartens and schools. The cases are unrelated and currently no epidemic outbreaks are observed. In educational institutions where there are cases of whooping cough, children are under medical supervision.

“Children who have not been immunized have been removed. Sick children are also at home receiving home treatment,” said Dr. Anka Baeva, head of the “Anti-epidemic control” department at the RZI – Varna.

In the Burgas region, there are 10 patients with whooping cough, most of them children. And in Plovdiv, the infected are mostly students. Measures are being taken everywhere to limit the contagion.

“The contact children from the class continue to attend their educational activities, and the management of the school decides how to limit the contact, whether they will go out during recess at a different time to the other children. In one of our schools, there are opportunities and they are in a completely separate building

For now, the health authorities do not envisage additional measures in schools.

“If the school authorities consider and the relevant director decides in agreement with the RUO, there is no problem for them to pass in an electronic environment,” said Assoc. Dr. Angel Kunchev, chief state health inspector.

“In most schools where there are such cases, there is quarantine, which is in the school itself. A very small number of classes are taught in an electronic environment. For now, what is in the dialogue with the Ministry of Health, there the experts say that there is no need for mandatory masks,” explained Galin Tsokov, Minister of Education and Science.

Whooping cough patients are most contagious 3-4 days before the first symptoms appear.
