“Sthe world premiere” of a new biographical film about Russian President Vladimir Putin will be on September 26. But there is a catch. The entire bar was created by… artificial intelligence.

The film, titled Putin, will be released in 35 countries and is described as getting “up close and personal with the Kremlin leader’s story”

First announced in May 2022, Putin is the English-language debut of Polish director Besaleel, aka Patrick Vega. He is responsible for a string of domestic box office hits featuring gruesome violence including Pitbull, Mafia Women and Botox.

In the statement, the director said he created his own AI technology to complete the film version of Putin.

“Inviting Putin to the studio for 20,000 frames was not an option. And archival material available online did not allow the training of a high-resolution deepfake model suitable for cinematic use. As a result, after almost two years of development, we created our pioneering technology. It is driven by artificial intelligence and allows us to craft the cinematic character without relying on real human models,” explains Vega.

The strip was originally titled The Vor in Law (a term used for elite organized crime figures). The film also includes footage shot by Ukrainian filmmakers during the Russian invasion.

The film’s trailer features footage of Putin, dressed in a dirty diaper, participating in martial arts competitions, facing off against Boris Yeltsin

Besaleel adds:

“Putin is not just a movie. It is a response to a global quest to understand the motives and actions of one of the most controversial figures in modern politics. The mission of my production is to provide viewers with a “user’s guide” to Putin. It aims to alleviate the fear and uncertainty that dominates the world today.”

Putin is presented as a political thriller and a psychological portrait of the Russian leader for an international audience

The film draws the connections between Putin’s ties to organized crime during his time as mayor of St. Petersburg. It also examines his approach to politics, both in Russia and on the international stage. Besaleel called the film an artistic protest against “the Russian dictator and the war in Ukraine” and claimed that as a Polish director he was ideally suited to make it.

“Americans and even Western Europeans fail to understand Putin,” says Bessalil. “I am a person stigmatized by communism, as I grew up in communist Poland. At the same time, I was shaped by the audiovisual culture of Hollywood. It is precisely for this reason that I find myself able to translate the subtleties of Eastern culture into the language of the West.”

Stylistically, the director said he plans to “merge real-world characters” with more iconic figures. They are taken from Russian and Western art. Among them are the works of the medieval Russian Orthodox artist Andrei Rublev and the Italian Renaissance master Caravaggio.

“I want the characters of saints and demons in my film to be perfectly combined with the world of the streets of St. Petersburg full of ragged and disheveled people. With tortured Russian souls.”
