The case with the death of the woman in childbirth has been going on for 13 years because it started for the third time
Dismissals of judges and jurors due to doubts about objectivity mark the process
Deceased experts, impeachment of judges and jurors have been stalling the case for the tragic death of the birth mother Deyana Georgieva for 13 years. This was explained to “Bulgaria Today” by lawyer Lyudmil Rangelov, who is defending the interests of the persecuted doctors for the death of the young woman.
“This is the third time the case for Deyana’s death has started! Unfortunately, now that we have restarted with Judge Tony Getov, he has started looking for the experts who did the triple and quintuple examinations on Deyana’s body back in the pre-trial proceedings , but some of them had died. Others are very old and cannot travel, and they are from Varna. Now we expect it to be ready by the month of May, as the experts themselves said in his letter to the court the other day.” This was explained by lawyer Rangelov on the occasion of another stumbling block in the case of the death of the woman in childbirth, which has been marked by all sorts of vicissitudes from the very beginning.
“The main reason why some of the experts died and others were sick is that the case started for the third time and dragged on for 13 years. It started for the first time in 2017 before judge Dimitrina Angelova. In 2019, one of the jurors recused himself Because of comments made by Deyana’s mother, his objectivity was questioned and Judge Angelova recused herself, and we had to start over with Judge Angelova The case was assigned to Emil Dechev, who became a deputy minister, but alas, the case started anew for the third time. We questioned the witnesses, which they did too for the third time. The witnesses were even questioned four times, at the three starts of the case and in the pre-trial phase. They have already forgotten some details and facts surrounding Deyana’s tragic death, which is normal, considering that more than 13 years have passed.” , lawyer Rangelov explains.
“Now the five-person expert examination appointed by Judge Getov is comprehensive. He appointed the five experts and gave both sides of the case a chance and an opportunity to set tasks. It is difficult, you see that the five experts cannot gather for a long time, they cannot This type of examination is extremely difficult to prepare – the experts are different specialists from different cities. Who is sick, who is healthy, must come together to review the medical documentation, which is really voluminous are the documents from three hospitals,” attorney Rangelov explains the complexity of the case and of the examinations.
“This is a rare piece of bad luck – a case starts three times, a judge starts it and almost closes it, then another judge becomes deputy minister. In general, this process is expert, the case is very complicated from a medical point of view. There is no neither the lawyers nor the witnesses will decide it, it will be decided by the experts and the expert reports prepared by them. The matter is very specific and very delicate,” explains lawyer Rangelov.
Square: The tragedy!
On September 12, 2011, 19-year-old Deyana entered the “Sheynovo” AG, where she chose to give birth to her first child. Dr. Lozanov, one of the defendants, was on duty at the time. They decide that a section should be done. The operation is performed personally by Dr. Lozanov. The young woman gives birth to a beautiful and healthy baby boy. The gynecologist then proceeds to repair the incisions made, but fails to remove the entire placenta from the uterus. The parts thus left become the cause of the transformation of the uterus into a focus of sepsis.
On the same day, Dr. Baidanova-Vasileva, who is also in the dock, was the young woman’s attending physician. The very next day after giving birth, the woman in labor begins to experience severe pain and malaise. Her condition was due to the sepsis that had already begun due to the infection that had occurred as a result of the forgotten part of the placenta and amniotic membranes. In the following days, the pains and discomfort of the woman in labor increased, and she even collapsed. Dr. Vasileva does not appoint a single study and does not help Deyana in any way. On September 16, despite complications with the woman in labor, Dr. Baidanova decided to discharge her.
On September 20, Deyana was admitted in a serious condition to “Pirogov”. On the same date, after an extended consultation, it was decided that the 19-year-old woman should undergo a diagnostic laparoscopy. The operation was performed by Dr. Filipov, another defendant. Dr. Chervenyakov, Dr. Hristov and Dr. Tsekov, also defendants, were called as consultants on the spot. During the examination, they found that an emergency operation was required. The parturient uterus and secondarily affected colon should be removed immediately. But Dr. Filipov and his team estimate that they may have to wait a few days. In the following days, the mother’s condition continued to deteriorate. On September 28, Deyana was transferred to the Nephrology Clinic at the “Alexandrovska” UMBAL, and on October 7, a laparotomy was performed, during which the uterus and part of the large intestine and the forgotten placenta were removed.
Despite the efforts made by the medics at Aleksandrovsk Hospital, on October 24, 2011, 19-year-old Deyana died of sepsis. Then the mother of the young girl, Lyudmila Velinova, joined the prosecution in the case against the doctors. The process has dragged on for over 12 years now. It is expected that there will be some development on May 22, when the examinations will be ready and the fugitive witnesses will be forcibly brought. Accused in the case are six doctors – Dr. Yavor Lozanov and Dr. Elena Baidanova-Vasileva from “Sheynovo” and Dr. Antonii Filipov, Dr. Alexander Chervenyakov, Dr. Vladislav Hristov and Dr. Hristo Tsekov from ” Pirogov”. The case is expected to continue in May.
