The pharmacies in Veliko Tarnovo and the region no longer have pertussis vaccines. The quantities, according to the pharmacists, ran out already in the middle of the week. This confirmed for “Focus” and Yana Uzunova, master pharmacist and manager of several sites in the old capital. She specified that there are no vaccines in the warehouses either, at least in the ones that her pharmacies work with.

“The last check I made was this morning and I can confirm that the quantities in the warehouses are gone. The vaccine ran out already on Wednesday at noon,” summarizes Uzunova.

The reason for the lack of preparations is the increased demand, adds the specialist, but he also explains that this type of immunization is done only and only on a doctor’s prescription – there is no way a patient can buy a vaccine freely, at his discretion.

“As a result of the information that the media has been flooding us with in recent days, people are following the data on the increased morbidity and are concerned accordingly, that’s why the inquiries about vaccines have increased quite a bit, they come and consult daily, and we refer them to the GPs, who can best judge whether they need immunization,” commented the pharmacist.

The RZI – Veliko Tarnovo reminds that the main means of prevention and combating whooping cough is the administration of a vaccine. Immunizations against the disease are included in the Immunization Calendar. After the introduction of active immunization, a sharp drop in morbidity, a change in the clinical course (slow forms of whooping cough are observed) and a drop in mortality were observed.
