The first cherries in our country for this year are sold for up to BGN 50 per kilogram. The record price holds a stall at the Thursday market in Plovdiv, bTV reported.
The owner claimed that the fruits were his own production, plucked from a tree in his yard.
This year the cherries ripened about a month early because of the warm weather in April. Traditionally, the cherries from the massifs in Plovdiv and Pazardzhik are the first to appear on the market.
There are also imports from Greece, which are sold at the stalls for BGN 40 per kilogram. The seller of Greek cherries says that he has been stocking up for several days and despite the high price, the goods are selling. Some take 100 grams, and others a kilogram or more.
“They buy both two and three kilos. There are passengers for every train – there are people with opportunities and they take the more expensive”says one of the sellers at the Thursday market in Plovdiv.
Bulgarian cherries are also available on the market – BGN 25 per kilogram from the village of Brestovitsa and BGN 15 – from the village of Brestnik. There is no lack of buyers, say people from the neighboring stalls.
Due to the good weather, the market will be full of Bulgarian cherries for two weeks, and the prices will drop, predict cherry orchard owners.
Growers fear frost and wonder how they will protect the trees because the fire department does not allow fires around them. The other problem is hail.
And the cherries from the Kyustendil region are expected to be ready for the Easter holidays. The old, Bulgarian varieties “May 1” and “May 24” have already been shot and will be ready in a few days.
They are extremely juicy, but they are smaller, and this is the reason why traders buy them at significantly lower prices than “Bigaro burla” – an early, large, fleshy cherry, French variety.
