US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken was welcomed in Beijing on Friday by President Xi Jinping in an attempt both super-powers to stabilize their relationship. The summit comes days after Congress in Washington passed a new financial aid package for Taiwan and is preparing to ban the platform TikTok on American territory.
The US’s No. 1 diplomat earlier held a close 5 hour meeting and with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, who set the tone for the talks by warning Blinken not to advance the “red lines” of China. However, the Secretary of State is certainly expected to raise the Chinese issue with President Xi aid to Russia in the war with Ukraine. Beijing already counters that did not provide weapons to any of the parties, and added that “it is not a producer or a participant in the crisis in Ukraine.” However, the communist state said that normal trade between China and Russia should not be interrupted or restricted.
World analysts note that Blinken visited China less than a month ago inauguration of William LyeTaiwan’s pro-sovereignty president whom Beijing loathes and fears will lead to voltage increase in the Taiwan Strait and in the greater South China Sea.
Fragile bilateral relations between the US and China will be further tested as the US moves to new presidential electionsin which both candidates say they will fight to be tough on China and stand up for national, mostly economicinterests.
