On the eve of April 28 – International Day of Remembrance for those killed in occupational accidents and World Day for Healthy and Safe Work, a commemorative ceremony was traditionally organized in Shumen. Wreaths and flowers were laid in front of the memorial plaque to those who died and were injured in work accidents in Shumen.
The regional governor of Shumen Prof. Dobromir Dobrev, the deputy regional governor Neli Georgieva, the chairman of the regional structure of the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (KNSB) in Shumen Radostin Pavlov, the head of the Regional Department of Education Kremena Marinova, representatives of the Territorial Division of The National Insurance Institute (NII), the Labor Inspectorate and members of the Regional Council for Working Conditions in the city.
The plaque was placed on the facade of the building on Tsar Kaloyan Street in Shumen at the initiative of KNSB, on the occasion of a tragic work accident in the building on December 11, 1986, in which four workers died, recalled the regional coordinator of the Regional Council of KNSB in Shumen Radostin Pavlov. “We wish for fewer accidents at work, more investment in safe and healthy working conditions, more training and collective labor agreements, because where there is collective bargaining there are better pay conditions and better working conditions,” said more Pavlov.
According to data from the Territorial Division of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health in Shumen, in 2023, 77 occupational accidents occurred at the workplace, in connection with or on the occasion of the work performed, of which two were registered accidents with a fatal outcome. The Shumen district is in tenth place among the 28 districts in the country in terms of the number of occupational accidents.
From the beginning of 2024 to April 22, there were 15 fatal accidents in the country directly related to the work process, and 22 were accidents due to heart attacks and strokes. The data is quite frightening. This is what Ekaterina Asenova, the executive director of the Executive Agency (IA) “Main Labor Inspectorate” said in an interview for BTA, after the end of the Regional Conference on the topic “Go home after work! Someone is waiting for you there” of the Agency, which took place at the National Press Club of BTA in Shumen.
