According to data from the Central Meteorological Administration, the island of Taiwan was hit by a shallow earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale. There are no immediate tsunami warning messages.

The quake, which struck just off the coast at 2:21 a.m. (6:21 p.m. GMT), was at a depth of 24.9 km and set off cellphone alarms in the capital, Taipei, an AFP journalist said. A few days ago dozens of earthquakes shook the island.
