Russia’s newest weapon has already made its “debut” in the conflict with Ukraine. According to a report by the Institute for the Study of War, the Russian state is targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with its newest missile, the Kh-69.

According to Ukrainian media, on April 11, Russia fired 11 X-69 missiles against the Trypil thermal power plant in the Kyiv region. A total of 82 missiles and multiple drones were then launched against the energy facility, of which the Ukrainian Air Force reported that they shot down 18 missiles and 32 drones.

The next day, April 12, Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Major Ilya Yevlash said that Moscow had used Kh-69 missiles for the first time, following a search by investigators around the ruins of the thermal plant.

Yevlash added that the first units of the new missiles came off the assembly line in 2023, which he said is proof that “Russia continues to produce new and new weapons.”

These are brand new missiles produced in 2023, which means that Russia continues to produce and improve its military arsenal, Yevlash commented, quoted by the British newspaper “Telegraph”.

He also added that the Air Force of Ukraine is currently studying how to counter Russia’s new missiles, suggesting that American Patriot air defense systems could most effectively neutralize them.

According to the Institute for the Study of War, the X-69 missiles can be launched from Su-34 and Su-35 fighters, not from strategic bombers. From there, they also specified that they are not as fast as the Dagger missiles, but on the other hand, they are “in all probability” more powerful.

According to military experts and analysts, the inclusion of the new Russian missiles will “probably” worsen the situation for Ukraine on the front. According to them, the successful attack on the Trypil thermal power plant showed that the X-69 is an extremely difficult target for Ukraine’s air defense systems.
